Product Description:

Molas 3D: Advanced 3D Doppler Wind Measurement Lidar

The Molas 3D represents a cutting-edge, three-dimensional scanning lidar system designed for Doppler wind measurements. It operates on the principle of pulsed laser coherent Doppler frequency shift. By emitting pulsed laser beams and detecting the frequency shifts in backscattered signals from atmospheric aerosols, the system accurately computes line-of-sight wind speed and direction at numerous spatial points. This process enables the creation of high-resolution 3D reconstructions of wind fields.

To meet a wide range of measurement demands, the Molas 3D offers multiple versatile scanning modes:

  • PPI (Plan Position Indicator): Performs horizontal sector or full 360° scanning, making it ideal for mapping wind fields over expansive areas.
  • RHI (Range Height Indicator): Conducts vertical elevation scans, perfect for capturing vertical wind profiles and boundary layer structures.
  • DBS (Doppler Beam Swinging): Uses multi-beam fixed-direction scanning to accurately retrieve horizontal wind vectors and vertical velocities.
  • Program Scan: Allows user-defined custom scanning trajectories, providing maximum flexibility for specialized research needs.

The Molas 3D delivers impressive operational range and resolution capabilities. It supports a maximum acquisition distance of 15 kilometers, with sight detection reaching up to 10 kilometers at an altitude of 600 meters. Vertically, it can measure up to 4 kilometers in height. Distance resolution is configurable among 15 m, 30 m, 75 m, and 120 m, supporting as many as 300 distance layers. The system measures line-of-sight wind speeds ranging from -75 m/s to +75 m/s with a precision of 0.1 m/s. Its scanning head can rotate horizontally by 360° and tilt vertically from -10° to 190°, maintaining a pointing accuracy of ±0.005°, guaranteeing highly reliable and repeatable data collection.

This lidar system is engineered for a variety of complex applications, including:

  • Offshore Wind Resource Assessment: Providing accurate wind mapping over marine areas where traditional meteorological masts are unfeasible or cost-prohibitive.
  • Complex Terrain Analysis: Capturing wind flow patterns over mountainous, hilly, and valley regions characterized by highly heterogeneous wind behavior.
  • Wind Turbine Wake Detection: Enabling visualization and analysis of wake deficits and turbulence downstream of wind turbines, aiding in farm layout optimization and reduction of fatigue loads.
  • Airport Glide Path Wind Shear Warning: Offering early warning signals for dangerous wind shear conditions along aircraft approach paths, enhancing overall aviation safety.
  • Urban Meteorological Monitoring: Observing wind field dynamics within urban canyons to support city planning and pollution dispersion studies.
  • High-Altitude Turbulence Detection: Monitoring atmospheric turbulence at elevated altitudes, supporting both aviation and climate research efforts.

Designed for dependable performance in harsh environments, the Molas 3D can operate within temperatures from -40°C to +60°C and tolerate humidity levels between 0% and 95% RH (non-condensing). Its enclosure is rated IP65, with internal components meeting IP66 standards. Data can be stored locally for periods ranging from 5 to 18 months in standard .csv format. Additionally, data transmission is supported via 1000BASE-TX Ethernet and 4G remote access. The device includes output interfaces such as Profibus DP, Modbus TCP, and CAN, facilitating seamless integration with various control and data acquisition systems.

Combining robust performance, flexible scanning options, and extensive application versatility, the Molas 3D is a premier solution for advanced wind measurement and atmospheric studies. It empowers industries and researchers to make informed, data-driven decisions with confidence.
